AACU Minute - Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Resources
Throughout Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, urologists distinguish themselves within the medical profession for their commitment to civic engagement and patient education. Charity events, speaking engagements and community clinic hours dominate many schedules as summer comes to a close.
Unique opportunities to promote prostate cancer screening and gain support for important legislation demands your attention before the national spotlight on many urologists' daily work dims.
The AACU Prostate Cancer Detection Advocacy Resource Center (www.bit.ly/aacu-pca) features patient education materials and draft emails to members of Congress on essential reforms to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Action on this legislation is vitally important as the committee of general practitioners and public health officials reconsiders its 2012 recommendation against PSA-based screening for prostate cancer.

At the recent AACU State Society Network Advocacy Conference, then President-elect Charles McWilliams, MD, spoke to the importance of patient advocacy and launched a prostate cancer early detection campaign. As the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force prepares an updated prostate cancer screening recommendation, Dr. McWilliams urged urologists to engage their patients with educational materials and advocacy post cards available on site and online. The AACU Prostate Cancer Detection Advocacy Resource Center includes infographics and template letters urologists may share with patients and the larger community.
